About DICE
DICE (Diabetes Inspired Culinary Education) is a free family- and community-based program that aims to improve child and family health through a combination of Type 1 Diabetes-focused cooking, nutrition, and psychosocial activities. The DICE program includes 10 in-person lessons that are taught in a new teaching kitchen at Case Western Reserve University. A family meal is prepared and enjoyed together at each lesson! Each lesson focuses on a different Type 1 Diabetes or nutrition topic that families have said is a challenging aspect of Type 1 Diabetes management, such as managing your child's blood sugar during exercise and dining out. In addition, the DICE program includes Type 1 Diabetes-focused psychosocial lessons / activities that can help youth and their families not only cope with Type 1 Diabetes, but thrive. Psychosocial topics discussed includes learning about how mood and diabetes impact each other, coping strategies, and diabetes burnout.
As this is a research study, all participating families will be asked to complete 3 data collection sessions over a period of 9 months. During these data collection sessions, families will be asked to complete some measures and surveys that ask about Type 1 Diabetes management, nutrition, family meals, and more.
